The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser is a classic SUV reborn with a modern twist. As Toyota‘s longest-running nameplate, it was a popular choice for everyday drivers and weekend warriors for over six decades.
With sales lagging in later model years, Toyota discontinued the Land Cruiser in 2021 and went to the drawing board. It returned in 2024 with a smaller cabin, frame, and retro styling. It’s now more affordable and capable — let’s check out the 2024 Land Cruiser’s features.
A back-to-basics design and cheaper pricing mark the comeback of 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser trims
The Land Cruiser’s three distinct trims blend rugged design and affordability to fit a wide range of needs.
Land Cruiser 1958
Starting MSRP: $57,400
The 1958 Edition is named after the year the Land Cruiser made its way to North American shores. The most basic of the three trims, it has a boxy retro design, smaller screens, and manually adjusted, cloth-upholstered seats. While utilitarian, it’s not entirely without charm and comfort. It features a heated steering wheel and seats, three-zone automatic climate control, a six-speaker stereo, six USB-C ports, a 2,400-watt AC inverter and a three-prong outlet.
Land Cruiser
Starring MSRP: $63,400
The Land Cruiser is the mid-level trim in this lineup. It features everything the base trim does, but with the addition of LED fog lights and headlights, Toyota’s Multi-Terrain Monitor (MTM) system, which helps drivers see what’s around them when parking or on the trail, and Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) system, to improve traction and control. SofTex-trimmed seats also take the place of cloth.
Land Cruiser First Edition
Starring MSRP: $76,345
Additional to the First Edition trim is a 3/4-length roof rack, front and rear mudguards, leather-trimmed seats, and a 14-speaker JBL Premium Audio system. Toyota’s Panoramic View Monitor (PVM) allows drivers to see blind spots easily with a 360-degree bird’s eye view of everything around them.
Land Cruiser’s smaller hybrid engine is more powerful than its predecessor’s V-8
The naturally aspirated V-8 engine in the previous iteration of the Land Cruiser is no longer. Toyota has replaced it with a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine assisted by two motors. It cranks out 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. The V8 topped out at 381 ponies but with less torque, at 401 pound-feet.
All trims feature an eight-speed automatic transmission and a four-wheel-drive system. Land Cruiser trims include locking center and rear differentials, low-range gearing, a crawl control system, and hill descent control.
Fuel economy is good, but not great in this hybrid
While it gets better mileage than it did with its former V8 (it had a combined rating of 14 mpg) as a hybrid SUV, the Land Cruiser is less fuel efficient than some of its competitors—it gets 22 mpg/city, 25 mpg/highway, and 23 mpg overall.
In comparison, the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe has about the same combined mileage, in addition to 56 MPGe, with an all-electric driving range of 26 miles. Furthermore, the Land Cruiser requires premium fuel, which subtracts from any savings you may have gained.
2024 Toyota Land Cruiser 0–60 mph
Depending on the source, the Land Cruiser’s acceleration from 0 to 60 is 7.7 to 8.2 seconds. While this is a respectable for a midsize SUV, it isn’t the fastest in its class — in comparison, the Land Rover Defender 110 is about a second and a half faster, and the Lexus GX550 takes about 6.3 seconds to reach that speed.
The Land Cruiser’s intuitive technology adds enjoyment to your drive
The 1958 trim has a small 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen display, which jumps to 12.3 inches in higher trims. USB-C charging ports, wireless charging pad, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto are standard across all models. Onboard Wi-Fi and a 14-speaker JBL stereo system are standard in the First Edition model and optional in lower trims.
Safety and driver-assistance systems
All Land Cruiser models feature the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 system with several driver assistance features, such as automatic high-beam headlamps that switch headlights based on traffic and lighting conditions, lane-departure warning to alert drivers when drifting out of their lane or switching lanes without a turn signal, and adaptive cruise control that automatically adjusts the Land Cruiser’s speed and distance from the car ahead.
Toyota offers comprehensive warranty and maintenance coverage on its Land Cruiser models
New owners can be safe in the knowledge that they have a full two years or 25,000 miles of complimentary scheduled maintenance, which is rare in this class of SUV. Coverage for the following includes:
- Hybrid components: 10 years or 150,000 miles
- Limited warranty: Three years or 36,000 miles
- Powertrain warranty: Five years or 60,000 miles
With a smaller body and affordable price comes a different set of competitors
The smaller, less expensive Land Cruiser has competitors in the Ford Bronco, Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Nissan Armada, and Toyota 4Runner. The Lexus GX and the Land Cruiser have much of the same off-road gear and are built on the same platform with identical wheelbases, but the GX is the more upscale competitor.
Final thoughts
The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser’s smaller size and more affordable price, combined with its off-road prowess, gives it a larger consumer base than ever before. Despite all the changes over the years, it’s gone back to its rugged roots, making it a solid choice for both city streets and the trail.
